Sully was agitated enough by Ofelia’s reaction that he decided to assign her a sidekick for the day. That meant stopping in at his old condo, which he’d yet to put on the market. Ben Landry, a man literally displaced through time because of a magical fluke, had been living there since the riverboat he’d gone missing on had returned to port in New Orleans … a hundred years late. Ben had been working for Ofelia for months at this point, and he was loyal. That was the reason Sully went to him after separating from his fiancée at the hospital.

“You want me to babysit her?” Ben scrubbed his jaw as he sat in one of the living room chairs and drank the chicory Sully had brought him as a bribe.

“See, I would really prefer you not use that word,” Sully replied. He managed a smile, but it was wan. “I just don’t want her being alone. You have magic at your disposal.”

“Not as much as she does.”

“True, but she doesn’t need the magic as much as she does the friendship.” Sully recognized he was walking a fine line but couldn’t seem to stop himself. “I just don’t want her to be impulsive and get in over her head.”

“I’ve never known Ofelia to be impulsive.”

Sully pinned Ben with a “come on” look. “I love her dearly—more than anything—but that is a pile of crap. She acts before she thinks all the time. It just happens to work out for her more often than not.”

“Okay, so why are you so worried this time?” Ben sounded utterly reasonable.

“Because those vampires went after Oscar, who is already vulnerable. The guilt Ofelia feels for being the one to put him in the hospital against his will is profound.”

“I thought Felix had a hand in that,” Ben argued.

“He did, but Felix doesn’t feel the same level of guilt that Ofelia does. In her head, Ofelia knows this was the right thing to do. Oscar tugs on her heartstrings though. He begs to go home. Ofelia doesn’t have it in her to continually crush her father. That’s why we need him to get better.”

“And screaming about vampires approaching his window in the middle of the night does not make him appear to be getting better,” Ben surmised.

“Not in the least.” Sully was relieved the other man seemed to be understanding him. “I know Ofelia can handle herself. She’s strong, a total badass really, but she’s mad today. She’s like … super mad. I don’t want her to get out of control and put herself in danger because of it.”

“And my presence will somehow fix that?” Ben was understandably dubious.

“She’ll at least think twice with you there. Plus, if you think she’s about to do something crazy, you can call me.”

“You mean tattletale.”

Sully scowled at him. “Don’t say it like that. I don’t want you tattling on her. I just want to be able to get help to her if she needs it.”

Ben leaned back in his chair, debating.
